About Hořice na Šumavě

During the 19th century, the site was hit by several fires which - as they say - gave the name to this municipality. The historic part of the town is an urban heritage zone and comprises 27 protected structures, including a Gothic granite pillory and a system of seven interconnected fountains. Hořice na Šumavě became famous for its passion play. Since 1816, this local performance presenting the life of Jesus Christ has attracted nobility, high church officials, members of the Imperial family as well as other personalities. Notably, it received 80 thousand visitors within two years. The stately theatre building had the capacity of containing up to 2,000 viewers under its roof.
